International Dinner

The International Dinner takes place in November each year, just as the numerous foreign language honor societies are getting ready for the new school year.  The German, Spanish, and French Honor Societies come together for a potluck dinner in the Northwest commons, and invite anyone that studies a foreign language to come.  It's a night full of good international food, and lots of entertainment: each language sings a song, and some of the foreign exchange students perform as well.  Before the night is over, the traditional round of Brother John/Frere Jacques/Bruder Jakob/*spanish*.

International Breakfast

Each year in January, the French Honor Society invites the German Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society to join us in an international breakfast.  Held only for honor society members, each club brings a breakfast dish native to their country.  The French Honor Society provides French pastries, beverages, cups, napkins, plates, utensils, and decorations.

Foreign Exchange Student Welcome

Northwest has a long tradition of hosting international students and making them feel welcome.  The French Honor Society does its part by hosting a Welcome Night, where all international students can gather and get to know the French students from Northwest.  These friendships often continue throughout the year, and provide a source for greater cultural understanding.  The friendly atmosphere is accompanied by desserts and drinks provided by SHF members.

New Member Initiation

French Students meeting all requirements are invited to participate in the SHF Initiation.  The evening begins with dinner at Le Monde, a French cafe.  After dinner, everyone travels to Madame Waggoner's house for the initiation, which involves a quick description of the club and its history, the lighting of a red, white, or blue candle, and the repetition of our motto: "L'homme qui sait deux langues en vaut deux."  After initiation, the new members may attend the monthly meetings, and all other club activities.

Mardi Gras Bake Sale

This is the SHF's main fundraiser for the year takes place on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras).  This is a major holiday in France, and the members of SHF participate not only in selling baked goods, but also in learning more about the French culture.  We sell cookies, brownies, and puppy chow during both lunches, and the members dress in the SHF shirt and wear Mardi Gras beads.

Haiti Donation

Every year we donate our unspent funds to Haiti, which is a French speaking island in the Caribbean.  We send money to help the young children get clothing, food, medication, and education.

Awards Ceremony

This final gathering of the Language Honor Societies for year honors outstanding students.  This year in the French Honor Society, we honored our graduating seniors with cords. We gave two $100 dollar scholarships to Erin Kenny and Johna Wallace.  Also given were Outstanding Student Awards for levels 1-5 of French.

SHF Pique-Nique

This is our final activity for the year.  We each bring a bag lunch to Madame Waggoner's beautiful new house and eat by the lake.  After the meal, we usually play French games like Petanque (pronounced pay tonk).  It is a wonderful way to say good-bye to our seniors, and end another great year of French Honor Society.
