National Art Honor Society was started by the NAEA, the National Art Education Association.

The NAEA is an organization devoted to the pursuit of art education. It's members are teachers of all levels, students, retired teachers, art supply manufacturers, parents, and anyone else who is involved in the promotion of the arts.

In 1978, the NAEA recieved a grant from the Alliance for the Arts Education program to start the National Art Honor Society. In that year, 8 schools were chartered.

Since that time, the NAHS has grown rapidly, each year more and more schools become members of the NAHS.
